The main objectives of the Department of Geology of Metal and Minerals are:

- representation of state interests in the fields of geological study, replacement and rational use of mineral resources of Metals and Minerals;
- placing a state order for geological exploration with the aim of geological study of the mineral resource potential of Metals and Minerals and the replacement of its resources at the expense of the federal budget of the Russian Federation, its continental shelf and the World Ocean;
- organisation of an assessment of the results of exploration of Metals and Minerals and the accounting of their mineral resources, its continental shelf and the World Ocean;
- organisation of conducting in the established manner of geological, economic and cost estimation of solid mineral deposits and subsoil areas;
- organising the preparation of an information base for licensing subsoil plots for the purpose of geological exploration, prospecting, assessment and exploration of solid mineral deposits, as well as their development, at the stage of preparing licensing lists;
- the organisation of state regulation of the collection, storage and use of geological information on reserves and forecast resources of solid minerals.
