Sergey Petrov graduated from Geology Department of St. Petersburg State University in 1986 with a degree in Geochemistry. After graduation from the university for 20 years, he had been working at the Institute of Mechanobr, where he took part in 70 projects, dealing with various aspects of the study of technological properties of various types of mineral raw materials.

Since 1999, S.V. Petrov has been working as an assistant professor at Geology Department of St. Petersburg State University, where he is developing methods of study the composition and technological properties of ores, lecturing (courses "Economics of Mineral Resources", "Applied Mineralogy", "Geological and Economic Assessment of Mineral Deposits", etc.) and performing as an expert (a member of the ESOEN, AusIMM).
